Mars Hill Church is excited to announce that we’ve started to translate our resources into Spanish. 92% of our web traffic is from outside of Seattle and Spanish is one of the largest language groups that visit our site. More importantly, last year we opened a campus in Albuquerque and sent Acts 29 teams to South America.

We love resourcing and strengthening the global church so we want to make our downloadable resources available in as many languages as possible. We love local churches so we are raising up pastors in Mars Hill and Acts 29 with a passion to reach Spanish-speaking people with the Gospel.

We’ve started with the last few weeks of the Luke series and the Marriage & Men sermon from the 1 & 2 Peter Trial series. To view the subtitles push play, click on the “CC” tab in the video player, and select “ES”.

Marriage & Men

Jesus The Prophet

Jesus & Demons

Jesus Calls Peter, James, & John

We’ll be translating more materials; including books and community group materials. If you work in translation and want to help with the translation review process, please let us know here.

Marriage & Men (Matrimonio y Hombres)

Jesus The Prophet (Jesús el Profeta)

Jesus & Demons (Jesús y demonios)

Jesus Calls Peter, James, & John (Jesús llama a Pedro, Santiago, y Juan)

Estaremos trabajando para traducir más recursos, incluso libros y materials para los grupos comunitarios. Si usted trabaja en la traducción y quisiera ayudar en el proceso de revisar las traducciones, por favor avísenos AQUI.

Last night Pastor Mark went where no other pastor has gone before; in the Loveline studio with Dr. Drew. Armed with his Bible, a moleskin, and a microphone, Pastor Mark answered questions live on air. Even though it was new territory for a pastor, the subject matter wasn’t. “These are questions and topics that are part of most pastors’ counseling”, he explained to Dr. Drew before the show.

It all turned out well, with Dr. Drew saying at the end of the show, “I think this is an upturn for Loveline. I think we actually helped some people tonight.”

For those of you on the East Coast, the show will be on your local stations tonight. If you would like to listen online, the show will be available for free for the next 24 hours on lovelineshow.com. Keep in mind that the show contains mature subject matter and is not suitable for all audiences.

This is my travel time of year. Thankfully, my family and health are good, as is Mars Hill Church. This week I’ve got a number of things happening in LA. The list is long and curious, and since people have been asking a lot of questions, I thought maybe laying out the trip would help people understand what’s happening and how to pray.

Loveline with Dr. Drew – I will be live on the radio with Dr. Drew answering questions about sex on Tuesday, February 9. Details can be found here. For those unfamiliar with the radio program, it is the show on issues pertaining to sex, sexual abuse, and sexual addiction. From what I’ve been told, I may be the first pastor and possibly first conservative Christian ever on the show. In years past I co-hosted a small national radio show, and I love the format of taking calls live. Any prayers for me to pastorally serve people well for Jesus are appreciated.

Radicalis with Rick Warren – I will be preaching at Saddleback Church on Thursday, February 11, on the assigned topic of the cross of Jesus Christ. I look forward to meeting pastors of larger churches because I always enjoy learning from them about how to lead better and help Mars Hill be a better church for Jesus’ fame. I/we have a lot of learning and growing to do, and so I am always grateful for experiences like this, while also serving others by preaching about Jesus. More details are here.

Publisher meeting – Doctrine: What Christians Should Believe is due out at the end of March. Weighing in at 464 pages with around 1,000 footnotes, it is easily the best most comprehensive thing I’ve ever written. But it’s also the last book I am under contract to write. With the publishing industry in the tank, while I’m in LA I’ll be meeting with my agent, who was recently signed, to help sketch out the next few years of publishing. Grace and I really want to publish a book on marriage at some point, as well as some other more practical things.

Lovelife at the Orpheum – With LA being the world center for pornography creation, it should be quite a workload to preach on biblical sex and marriage on Saturday, February 13. More details can be found here.

I’ll be home Sunday to kiss my wife for Valentine’s Day, give my two daughters their funny cards and gifts from their daddy, and preach at Mars Hill.

Faith groups offer the fundamental social network for education, welfare and health in a nation with virtually no government — and that was true before the quake.

Driscoll’s reports on quake deaths of church choirs, pastors who have lost families flocks and buildings included two particularly chilling experiences, posted to his PastorMark Twitter page and Facebook accounts.

What follows is the first round of raw, unedited updates and photos from Pastor Mark in Haiti. They come from his Facebook and Twitter. He is in country to assess the situation and needs of the Haitian churches. Stay tuned for a more thorough account when the team returns to the States.
–

Warning Graphic Content. Yesterday we heard a gunshot behind us and a teenage boy had gotten shot in head and died immediately. He was just feet from the seminary property and next to a makeshift clinic where 5000 people are there sleeping outside. Warning this link contains graphic content http://bit.ly/4vNibL

–

This is a church security guard. The churches taking in victims and feeding people are under armed guard for safety. Imagine your ushers packing shot guns.

–

If u want a phone, cigarettes or a teenage girl you can get them here in Port au Prince. Like the American who said he’s on a relief mission and bought a hungry girl despite our confrontation.

–
Got to sleep indoors on concrete with a backpack pillow. God was gracious and I slept well and feel good, praise God.

–
It’s a war zone here in Haiti. There are no supplies, roads are closed etc.

–

Pray for this pastor. He just got back from his wifes funeral. He was teaching bible college when the earthquake hit and she was buried. He also lost his home & sleeps outside homeless with 4 young sons.

–

Haitians are literally walking around stunned, not crying and just shell shocked.

–

Are u in your church choir? Just visited a church that was over 1000 that fell in the quake. Many choir member bodies are still trapped.

—

The photo is rotted bodies in front of the Wesleyan church that was a thousand people til destroyed

–

Just saw ruins of largest evangelical church in PaP. Pastor is in his 60s many of his people are dead & his radio station no longer exists.

–

I will try and keep up for 2 days for mh online friends curious about our time in port au prince. Just be a bit gracious please. It’s been half a day and I’ve smelled a lot of dead bodies avoided a mob saw a guy shot in the head etc. Please don’t read anything into the posts I’m running on the fly and simple iPhone photos and pro video and photo are coming when we get online. Churcheshelpingchurches.org

–

Just prayed for a 24 yr old xn man digging the body of his 26 yr old brothers body from a rubble heap – he was the worship leader.

–

Pray for those who can’t get in with supplies but need to. We got in which is a miracle but it’s hit and miss. Franklin Graham and others need to get in and if what we heard is true it’s getting harder to land.

–

Franklin graham spent 6 hrs in air and couldn’t land. We landed in PaP got security detail and 2 cars. All coming together on the ground

–

Landed in hell but doing well. The soldiers first words off the plane were u will now see a crisis of biblical proportions.

–

Great morning at harvest bible church in Chicago. Learning a ton from Pastor James Macdonald. Wheels up 2am tonight to Haiti.

–

God has lined up all we need on the ground to get around in Haiti. Driver, translator, etc. Pray it all comes together.

–

Some surgeons/doctors are also on the flight into Haiti along with a thousand plus pounds of medical supplies.

–

God is really going before us. Our landing time in Haiti has been approved.

Last summer, a young woman—a member of our West Seattle campus—was in a horrible bike wreck while riding to work. Near death and then comatose for two weeks, it’s a miracle she survived and regained consciousness.

(Pastor Mark told her story in a recent sermon)

The crash left Angela with some serious injuries that will require years of intense rehabilitation. On December 22, Mars Hill West Seattle will host a benefit concert to help raise money for Angela’s medical fund. It’s an evening of classical music featuring one of Angela’s childhood friends who is now a concert violinist.

Angela and her husband Josh became Christians at Mars Hill Church (Josh shared his story on this blog last year), and we love them very much. With the help and care of friends, family, and, most of all, our good God, they are enduring this trial well. Please pray for them.

We recently received some good news from the folks at the Crystal Cathedral – Pastor Mark’s second sermon from the Hour of Power will air on Palm Sunday, March 28th, next year.

If you remember, his first sermon was on who Jesus is. The second sermon is all about what Jesus did as our Savior on the cross and deals with sin, death, hell, and the atonement.

We’re thankful that the Hour of Power has chosen to air the sermon and that they’re doing so on Palm Sunday, the day when the Church has historically celebrated Christ’s entrance into Jerusalem and towards Calvary.

As we get more information about times and channels we’ll post them here.

Pastor Mark’s latest column for the Washington Post’s On Faith column is now up. The question posed to him was:

Is there good without God? Can people be good without God? How can people be good, in the moral and ethical sense, without being grounded in some sort of belief in a being which is greater than they are? Where do concepts such as good and evil, right and wrong, come from if not from religion? From where do you get your sense of good and evil, right and wrong?

In response, Pastor Mark points to Imago Dei, the Biblical teaching that God made man in His own image.

Even those who do not believe in a god, or worship Jesus as the only God, cannot altogether erase the deep imprint of right and wrong because God stamped it on their very nature so that, despite being marred by sinful rebellion, it cannot be denied or ignored. In fact, we each appeal to this moral law every time evil is done against us; we appeal for something more than merely the survival of the fittest, where might makes right and morality is determined by those holding power. Therefore, we image God by respecting all of human life, particularly the weak, oppressed, sick, elderly, poor, unborn, and racial and cultural minorities because God values them as his image bearers.

You can read “Why Bad People Do Good Things” in it’s entirety at the Washington Post.

At 11:30pm tonight I’ll be featured for the third time on ABC’s Nightline. A month ago, Terry Moran and a great crew from ABC came to Mars Hill to talk with me about the second commandment. Terry had seen something I had posted on Twitter around the time of Michael Jackson’s funeral and wanted to follow up with me on the topic of idolatry in America.

I sat down for about 30 minutes with Terry, and we talked about how idolatry underlies all sin, how it is rooted on a false promise of happiness, how it ultimately destroys, how it is often the result of turning a good thing into an ultimate thing, and how it shows itself in our culture in how we idolize celebrities, athletes, food, family, sex, money, relationships, and achievement—or rather, what we call American culture.

We also took a drive in my Jeep and discussed some of the cultural idols littering my city. It was a bit precarious for the exceptional cameraman, who stood up in my Jeep while I drove as carefully as possible so as not to kill him. But things went well and we got some great footage of many modern-day temples: strip clubs, Seahawks stadium, Safeco Field, Starbucks headquarters, etc.

Most importantly the Nightline team gave me the chance to explain how Jesus is the only answer to all of our idolatry:

Idols take. Jesus gives.

Idols destroy life. Jesus gives new life.

Idols break apart people and relationships. Jesus redeems and heals.

The episode has been pushed five times and was finally confirmed this week. In God’s providence and goodness the timing has worked out perfectly, because this week is Mars Hill’s 13th anniversary and on Sunday I’m preaching on Acts 17 from the actual Mars Hill in Athens.

I’d like to thank ABC and Nightline for doing a creative series on the Ten Commandments and for giving me a shot to talk about one of them. I’ve really enjoyed working with Terry, Ely, Dan, and the rest of the crews they’ve brought with them.

Please join me in praying that God would work through this to overcome our rebellion and turn all of us—believers and non-believers alike—from our worthless idols to the only true King, Jesus.

On top of fitting over 500 people into the Lobo Theater for their launch this past Sunday, Pastor Dave Bruskas and the Albuquerque campus were featured across three local network affiliates – ABC, NBC, & FOX – that night. In addition to the campus opening, what was the story of note? It was a story about how the church showed the love and compassion of Jesus to their community.

Tragically, earlier this year a young mother strangled her three-year old son and buried him a local playground. Pastor Dave and the church worked to minister to the community around the playground by bringing them food and working with the city to replace the sand in the sandbox.

This is just one of the ways Mars Hill Church loves their cities. If you see a situation like this in your neighborhood or community, apply for a Micromission grant and lead a group to serve. It is in view of God’s mercy - a mercy that sent His Son to die for the ungodly, sinners, & His enemies (Romans 5) – that we offer our bodies and lives as living sacrifices (Romans 12:1).

We love to see people meet Jesus within our walls on Sundays, we love to see people become disciples of Jesus in community, and we love to see the church taking the love and mercy of Christ into our cities.

You can watch the video from the story at KOAT.
