“We are 60+year-old newlyweds”

Unexpected Tears
It was nearing Easter 2008, and my lovely daughter, Laura, and I were in the midst of a spat. Thinking to find a way past our difficulty, I asked Laura to join me for Easter services at Mars Hill Church in Ballard.
She previously had told me about the church and visited often, so she agreed to go with me. I expected noisy and crowded and most everyone way younger than myself. It was all of that and much, much more. I listened to Mark’s sermon and I was moved. I sang along with the band and the tears rolled down my face. Laura held my hand. I was amazed at how the experience moved me.
God’s Timing
My daughter, a Christian since a teenager, knew that Jesus was using the ministry of Mars Hill to lead me to Christianity. I was a lonely person who hated her job and spent too much time alone.
But upon my request, Laura and I continued to attend Mars Hill on the Eastside, and I heard each and every sermon in the series for new church members. At the same time, I was falling in love with Alton, and there was renewed anticipation and substance in my life.
New Life
Alton and I talked frequently about Christianity. He was a widower, and hoping to find a Christian woman with whom to build a new life. He gently encouraged me toward Jesus. I accepted and asked Jesus to take control of my life on April 2, 2008. I was joyfully baptized the following summer in Lake Sammamish.
Alton and I recognized that God chose us to spend the remainder of our lives caring for each other. We will celebrate our first anniversary on July 11, and our marriage exists to glorify God as a witness to each other and our extended family.
We love our church and our community group. We are 60+year-old newlyweds, and each of us has never been happier. We absolutely praise and thank Jesus daily for choosing us, for bringing us together, and for steering us to Mars Hill Church.
