Coat Drive makes the Seattle PI
On Saturday, our Downtown Seattle campus hosted a free lunch/coat giveaway for anyone in need. The Seattle PI mentioned the effort in a recent article about city-wide initiatives to serve the homeless during the colder months:
In Belltown on Saturday, members of Mars Hill Church’s downtown campus gave away about 400 jackets as part of its “Christmas Coat Lunch” program.
At one point, about 125 people waited outside to get warm clothing and a free meal. The line wrapped along Western Avenue and down Battery Street.
“It’s a good time to give out coats,” Seattle resident David West, 45, said as he waited to receive a jacket.
Inside, as people ate sandwiches and chips, a man who identified himself as Gerald, 56, flipped through hangers with coats.
His blue down jacket was so thin, he said it was losing its warmth.
“I think it’s pretty doggone nice,” he said, referring to the church’s efforts.
In addition to the 400 coats, the Downtown campus distributed 220 lunches and served more than 300 people.
